IMLI SAKHI – Tamarind Processing Centre
Turning Local Tamarind into Better Rural Livelihoods
The IMLI SAKHI Tamarind Processing Centre is a proposed community-owned initiative of Murhu Nari Shakti Kisan Producer Company Limited (MNSKPCL) in Khunti District, Jharkhand.
The initiative aims to procure raw tamarind directly from local farmers at fair prices and process it into value-added products using solar-powered infrastructure. It will help reduce distress selling, create employment opportunities for SHG women and generate sustainable income for farmers and the FPO.
Tamarind trees are widely available in Khunti District, indicates that approximately 65% of households own mature tamarind trees. However, most farmers currently sell raw tamarind with seeds to middlemen at only ₹25–₹30 per kg.
Through cleaning, deseeding, processing and packaging, tamarind can be converted into higher-value products and sold at better prices.
